IRCC Transitioning to Online Applications for Permanent Residence Programs

IRCC Transitioning to Online Applications for Permanent Residence Programs

On September 1, 2022, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it will be transitioning to online applications for most of its permanent residence immigration programs. This decision came as a result of IRCC’s efforts to modernize Canada’s immigration system and improve client service, especially after long delays and large backlogs experienced by many as a result of the pandemic.

The transition to online applications is not completely new. Since March 31, 2021, some individuals have been able to apply online through the Permanent Residence Portal (online PR Portal) for certain permanent residence programs. The online PR Portal provided applicants with more flexibility by applying through their devices and receiving immediate confirmation that their application was successfully submitted. Starting September 23, 2022, the online PR portal will begin to be opened for other permanent residence programs, meaning that individuals applying under the specified programs must submit their forms and required supporting documents online or otherwise risk the return of their application by IRCC.

IRCC has made arrangements for those who are unable to apply online and require accommodations, including those with disability.

The following is a list of the categories that will transition to online applications on the dates specified below.
