New Pathway to Permanent Residence for 90,000 Workers and Students

Canada's New Permanent Residency Policy

On April 14, 2021 the Minister of Immigration announced a new program to allow workers and students who are present in Canada to apply for permanent residence. The program begins on May 6, 2021 and runs until Nov 5, 2021. The goal is to admit to Canada people who have studied in the country or have Canadian work experience. The basic requirements to qualify under the two programs are as follows:

Temporary Policy Canadian Work Experience

Basic Requirements:

  • One year of Canadian work experience in a listed occupation in the last 3 years
  • Be employed in Canada in any occupation at the time the application is received
  • The work cannot be self-employment
  • English or French at least benchmark 4
  • Reside in Canada with valid temporary status and be physically present in Canada at the time the application is received and approved

Temporary Policy Post-Secondary Graduates

Basic Requirements:

  • Completed a post-secondary program in Canada after January 2017
  • Received a degree or diploma for a program of at least 2 years (16 months) in duration
  • Were authorized to study throughout the studies
  • Have a valid work permit
  • Be employed
  • Have English or French at benchmark 5 or above
  • Have valid temporary status at the time of the application and at the time the application is approved
